17-year-old Barak Valley girl commits suicide after her "obscene picture" goes viral

A 17-year-old girl reportedly committed suicide at Balacherra under Borkhola constituency in Cachar district on Wednesday after an “objectionable” picture of her was uploaded on social media.

According to sources, the girl committed suicide by hanging herself with a cloth at her home after an “obscene” picture of her’s was uploaded from a Facebook account, belonging to Sudip Das.

A first information report was lodged against Sudip by the girl’s family. As per family members, the victim decided to “take the extreme step” after not being able to bear the “shock” on coming to know that her objectionable picture had surfaced on social media.

Local residents, however, speculated that it was not a case of suicide and claimed some “foul play” in the incident.

Receiving the news, a team of police from Borkhola police station reached the spot following which the dead body was sent to Silchar Medical College and Hospital for autopsy. A probe has been initiated into the incident. The picture will be clear after the autopsy, police sources said.
