8 Arrested, 6 Shops Sealed in 24 KG Beef Seizure Drive Across Cachar

In a major crackdown on illegal beef trade, Cachar Police conducted simultaneous operations in six areas of the district on Tuesday (July 1), and arrested eight individuals allegedly involved in the sale and storage of beef in violation of The Assam Cattle Preservation Act, 2021.

The raids were carried out under Borkhola, Kalain, Udharbond, Silchar Sadar, Dholai, and Lakhipur Police Stations based on credible intelligence inputs. During the operation, which was conducted in the presence of magistrates, a total of 24.5 kg of meat—both cooked and raw—was seized from six different hotels and meat shops.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Cachar, Numal Mahatta, informed the media, “We held operations in six areas of Cachar and found suspected beef being illegally sold or stored. Eight people have been arrested, and six cases have been registered under the Assam Cattle Preservation Act.”

He added, “The law bans cattle slaughter and the sale or trade of beef in Assam. Yet we found violations of this Act, and six establishments were sealed as per legal procedure. The seized meat has been sent for verification by the veterinary department, and strict action will follow based on their report.”
