Brutal Murder in Kabuganj: Youth Stabbed to Death Outside Bar, Drug Trade Angle Suspected
In a chilling incident that unfolded on Friday (June 27) night, a 27-year-old youth named Rakib Hussain Laskar was brutally stabbed to death in front of S Cube Bar near Paikpar, close to Kabuganj, under the Dholai Police Station. The murder took place just off National Highway 306 (Silchar–Aizawl Road), and while initial reports indicated a bar-room brawl, police sources suspect a deeper connection to the illegal drug trade.
The incident occurred around 8:30 PM when Rakib, a driver by profession and resident of Kabuganj, went to the bar for a drink. According to eyewitness accounts, a heated altercation broke out inside the bar involving a group of youths. Rakib, although not initially involved, became entangled in the quarrel after he was allegedly approached and harassed by one of the men, Mongol from Bhaga Bazar, who was reportedly under the influence.
Rakib immediately called his vehicle owner, Nazu Laskar, informing him that a fight had broken out involving Sumit from Matinagar and Mongol, and now Mongol was turning aggressive towards him. Nazu rushed to the spot and tried to defuse the situation, but the argument escalated. Nazu reportedly slapped Mongol and requested the bar owner to evict the inebriated group. Following this, Mongol and his companions left the premises.
However, the situation took a deadly turn. About 30 minutes later, Mongol returned with a group in a Bolero vehicle. As Rakib stepped out to buy something from a nearby paan shop, Mongol allegedly ran up to him and stabbed him in the throat with a sharp steel knife before fleeing. Rakib collapsed on the spot, bleeding profusely. He was rushed to Silchar Medical College and Hospital, where doctors declared him “brought dead”.
Speaking to reporters, Nazu Laskar said, “The one who died, Rakib, had no link to the main quarrel. He was sitting separately, drinking quietly. The fight was originally between Sumit from Matinagar and Mongol’s group, and it was about drugs. Rakib was a simple driver. He got caught in the crossfire. I even warned him to get into the car and leave when I saw Mongol returning, but it was too late.”
Soon after the incident, Dholai Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge Kulendra Hajuri launched a swift investigation, and by 11 PM, Mongol was arrested from Bhaga Bazar.
Sources close to the investigation suggest the altercation may have stemmed from a failed drug deal. Reportedly, Sumit from Matinagar had brought Rakib along to the bar to finalise a narcotics transaction. A dispute over the deal allegedly led to tension between the groups, culminating in Mongol’s violent attack.
Police have confirmed that the accused, Mongol, is a resident of Bon village in Bhaga Bazar and is the son of alleged drug mafia figures Abidur Rahman and Bilkis Begum. He also runs a car wash and decoration shop near the Hindustan Petroleum petrol pump in Bhaga Bazar.
Dholai police have taken Mongol into custody and launched a detailed investigation. Authorities believe that further interrogation will uncover the true motive behind the murder and shed more light on the suspected drug links.
