Silchar Municipal Corporation Leads Cleanliness Drive at Annapurna Ghat Under Swachhata Hi Swatantrata

Silchar witnessed a vibrant display of civic responsibility on Sunday morning (August 3) as the Silchar Municipal Corporation (SMC), under the dynamic leadership of Commissioner Srishti Singh, IAS, spearheaded a large-scale cleanliness drive at Annapurna Ghat and Annapurna Bridge in Ward No. 24. The initiative, held under the national theme “Swachhata Hi Swatantrata”, turned the riverside locality into a buzzing hub of unified action and environmental commitment.

Starting at 7:00 AM sharp, the drive saw enthusiastic participation from a wide spectrum of community stakeholders. Alongside the SMC and the Shristi Waste Management team, as many as 20 Purosakhis, women community leaders, joined hands with sanitation warriors (Safai Mitras), self-help groups such as Nilambari SHG, Maa Durga SHG, and Gita Studio, and members of the Padmanagar Jana Kalyan NGO. Their coordinated efforts transformed the ghat area into a cleaner, greener space, setting a shining example for the rest of the town.

While sharing her reaction, SMC Commissioner Srishti Singh expressed deep satisfaction at the public response. “Cleanliness is not just a service delivered by the municipality, it’s a reflection of people’s mindset and responsibility towards their surroundings. What we witnessed today at Annapurna Ghat was truly uplifting. This drive wasn’t just about clearing waste, it was about awakening a collective consciousness. Swachhata Hi Swatantrata is not a slogan, it’s a way of life”, Singh expressed.

The event highlighted how sanitation drives, when executed with grassroots involvement, go beyond hygiene and touch upon the core values of freedom, dignity, and civic discipline.

The success of the drive reaffirmed SMC’s commitment to sustainable cleanliness and people-driven governance. Beyond the cleaned drains and swept roads, the day left behind a stronger sense of community spirit and a renewed belief that every step towards cleanliness is a step towards real freedom.
