Imran Murder Probe: Body Exhumed for Autopsy, Locals Demand Capital Punishment of Accused

Dholai witnessed high tension on Friday (August 22) as the body of newly elected Rajnagar Kulicherra Gaon Panchayat president, Imran Hussain Barbhuiya, was exhumed 11 days after his mysterious death and reburied following a post-mortem at Silchar Medical College and Hospital.

Imran, who died on August 10, was initially believed to have suffered a heart attack. However, suspicions raised by his family and friends led to the discovery of incriminating WhatsApp chats between his wife, Rina Begum, and her alleged lover, Biju Ahmed Laskar (Bashiruzzaman Laskar). Biju Ahmed was Imran’s driver, who was fired from his job, after an alleged relationship between him and Rina Begum came to light.

Biju later confessed that Imran had been deliberately poisoned with sleeping pills mixed with food.

Acting on the findings, police arrested Rina, Biju, and four others, including Imran’s father-in-law Babul Uddin and brother-in-law Sadiq Ahmed, late on Wednesday. A magistrate supervised the exhumation of Imran’s body on Thursday for an autopsy.

On Friday afternoon, his mortal remains were brought home by ambulance and later taken to the burial ground without fresh funeral prayers. A new grave was dug beside the old one, where his body was reburied in the presence of hundreds of mourners. A sombre prayer ceremony followed, with people breaking down in grief and seeking forgiveness for the slain GP President’s soul.

The incident has sparked widespread outrage across Dholai. Villagers are demanding capital punishment for the accused, with calls for a fast-track trial and even appeals to lawyers not to represent the culprits.

Imran, a popular youth leader and emerging entrepreneur, leaves behind two young children who are now deprived of both parents. His brother, Nagib Ahmed Barbhuiya, has lodged a case against the six accused at Dholai Police Station.

On the other hand, Biju Ahmed has confessed in a viral video to conspiring in the murder of Imran Hussain. He admitted to handing over sleeping pills to Imran’s wife, Rina Begum, who mixed them with food and served them to Imran as dinner, which ultimately led to his death but was initially made to appear as a heart attack. He also confessed to having a physical relationship with Rina Begum after Imran’s death.

As protests intensify, the demand for justice grows louder in Dholai, with residents insisting the killers “must hang.”
