DGP Harmeet Singh Visits Barak Valley, Emphasises Shift Towards Public Service Policing

Assam’s Director General of Police (DGP), Harmeet Singh, IPS, is on a two-day visit to Barak Valley to review policing and law and order in the region. After assessing the work of Sribhumi and Hailakandi Police on Thursday, Singh reached Silchar on Friday morning (September 5), where he reviewed operations of Cachar Police and addressed the press at the office of the Senior Superintendent of Police.

This is Singh’s first visit to the valley since taking charge as DGP in May 2025. Highlighting the transformation of the force, he spoke in Assamese and said, “For over three decades, Assam Police was insurgency-oriented. Today, with peace and development, the force is transforming into a service-oriented one, dedicated to public welfare and community policing. It is the Chief Minister’s vision that the police should be the means of protection and security for the people. The target is to make Assam Police one of the top five forces in the country.”

Singh added that crime statistics, security issues, welfare measures, and infrastructure development are under review, with emphasis on community policing. On manpower, he stressed that Assam Police is a “zero-vacancy force” and assured that local concerns about staffing can be addressed through district police leadership.

Speaking on illegal infiltration, Singh said, “Our operations are ongoing in this aspect, which you can also see from the regular tweets of the Chief Minister.”
