Assam Govt Announces Special Casual Leave Under Matri Pitri Vandana Scheme In November
The Assam government has officially announced two days of Special Casual Leave for state employees under the Matri Pitri Vandana scheme, an initiative aimed at encouraging officials to spend quality time with their parents and parents-in-law.
According to a notification issued by the General Administration Department (GAD) on September 4, employees will be entitled to avail leave on November 14 (Friday) and November 15 (Saturday), 2025. The leave can also be clubbed with November 16 (Sunday), giving employees a continuous three-day break to dedicate to their families.
“All the State Government employees may apply through the portal matripitrivandana.assam.gov.in as per the SOP for the aforesaid Special Casual Leave available in the website,” the notification stated.
The scheme was first announced by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma in his Independence Day address of 2021, shortly after he assumed office. The CM had then highlighted the importance of strengthening family values and reconnecting with elderly parents and in-laws in the face of growing urbanisation and busy lifestyles.

“The Governor of Assam is pleased to allow the State Government employees to avail Special Casual Leave under the Matri Pitri Vandana Scheme on 14th November, 2025 (Friday) and 15th November, 2025 (Saturday),” the order read.
The Matri Pitri Vandana scheme, unique to Assam, is seen as a step towards promoting intergenerational bonding and ensuring that employees consciously take time off work to cherish their relationships with parents. Officials said that the scheme is part of the government’s broader emphasis on cultural and social values, beyond administrative reforms.
Earlier, during the first implementation of the scheme in 2022, thousands of government employees across the state had availed the leave, spending time with their parents and participating in family rituals. The government believes such initiatives also help build stronger societal harmony.
