Cachar Police Nab Dr J. P. Das, Alleged Mastermind of Fake Doctor Network

Cachar Police have finally arrested Dr J. P. Das, owner of Mawsumi Hospital in Silchar, who is alleged to be the mastermind behind Cachar’s fake or quack doctor network — often dubbed the ‘Munna Bhai’ racket.

Dr Das, accused in multiple cases, was arrested on Wednesday afternoon (October 22) and produced before the court the same day. The court has remanded him to four days of police custody for interrogation.

According to a senior police official, several fake doctors recently arrested in the district were found practising using certificates issued by dubious organisations. These certificates were allegedly provided by Dr Das in exchange for substantial sums of money. “He can certainly be termed the head of the Munna Bhai racket, as he was the one providing fake certificates to these pseudo doctors,” said the official, adding that his connections may extend beyond Cachar.

Dr Das also faces other allegations. Alongside Mawsumi Hospital, he owns Zeno Health Spa and Parijat Hotel & Restaurant on Trunk Road, Silchar. On 9 October, several female employees of Parijat Hotel vandalised property and assaulted a receptionist, alleging that Zeno Health Spa, operated under Das’s supervision, was involved in “objectionable activities”.

Though similar complaints had been raised against him earlier, Dr Das had allegedly managed to evade arrest by using his influence. However, this time, the police finally caught up with him.
