Mysterious Death of Woman Triggers Tension in Sonai; Police Detains Husband Over Domestic Violence Allegation

The mysterious death of a 23-year-old housewife has triggered shock and tension in Sonai, after her parents accused her husband and in-laws of murder and domestic abuse. Sonai Police have detained the husband for questioning following the registration of an FIR and have launched an investigation into the matter.

The deceased has been identified as Sakira Begum Choudhury (23), while the accused husband is Intezul Haque Laskar (26), a resident of Satkarakandi Part I. Sakira’s sister, Sumi Akhtar Choudhury, lodged an FIR at Sonai Police Station, naming Intezul along with two others as accused. The FIR also names Sultana Begum Laskar and Jaidul Haque Laskar, siblings of the accused husband.

Speaking to the media, members of the victim’s family alleged that Sakira fell seriously ill on Sunday night (January 25) following alleged physical assault and later died while being taken for medical treatment. They further alleged that Sakira, who was married in May 2024, had been subjected to continuous physical and mental abuse during her marital life. The family also stated that she had given birth to a baby girl around one and a half months ago.

After the post-mortem examination, Sakira’s body was brought to her parental home at Tolagram Part II on Monday afternoon (January 26) on Republic Day, where scenes of grief prevailed. The family demanded strict action, alleging that their daughter had been murdered.

Meanwhile, the family of the accused husband denied the allegations, claiming that the accusation of murder is false. According to them, Sakira suddenly fell ill late at night, and her husband immediately rushed her to Silchar Medical College and Hospital, but she could not be saved.

Locals of the village alleged that when they went to the hospital, they noticed white scum coming out of Sakira’s mouth, raising suspicion that she may have been poisoned. However, no official confirmation regarding the cause of death has been made so far.

Police sources said the post-mortem examination was conducted on January 26, 2026, following a magistrate’s inquest. The case remains under investigation, and further action will be taken based on the post-mortem report and other evidence.
