Clash Breaks Out At Congress Training Camp In Cachar’s Sonai, Members Blame BJP Agents

A scuffle broke out during a Congress training camp organised under the Sonai Assembly constituency in Cachar district on Friday afternoon (February 6, 2026), triggering fresh concerns over internal discord within the party.

The camp was held at a marriage hall near Sonabarighat. It was attended by office-bearers of the two Block Congress Committees of Sonai, along with mandal- and booth-level committee members. The situation reportedly escalated into a physical clash following a sudden altercation between two groups, in the presence of AICC trainer Nawaz Siddiqui.

On receiving information, police from Rangirkhari Police Station rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control. No serious injuries were officially reported.

According to party sources, the clash allegedly stemmed from long-standing factional rivalry linked to ticket aspirants for the upcoming Assembly elections. Allegations regarding the formation of “fake” mandal and booth committees are also said to have fuelled tensions among supporters.

Reacting to the incident, a local Congress leader claimed that the scuffle was triggered by outsiders. “It was a party meeting between booth committee members and mandal committee members, and there was a slight difference of opinion which led to a small debate. In the meantime, someone from outside entered the building and called the police. Those people who started the scuffle, according to me, are BJP agents,” he said.

He further alleged that a person named Mujahid, whom he claimed is not a Congress member, initiated the altercation. “There was one boy named Mujahid, who is not a member of our party. He started the altercation and ruffled with our organisational secretary. We have informed the district president. This is an attack on our party members by outsiders,” he added.

The incident has once again highlighted simmering unease within Congress’s internal circles in the Sonai constituency ahead of the elections.
