Tragic End: Cachar Youth Killed in Saudi Road Accident After Umrah Near Mecca

A youth from Cachar district has died in a tragic road accident in Saudi Arabia, leaving his family and neighbours in deep shock. The deceased has been identified as Sahid Ahmed Laskar, a resident of Sonabarighat Part 1.

According to information received by the family, Laskar had been working in Saudi Arabia for the past three years. The incident reportedly occurred while he was returning from performing Umrah after offering Eid prayers (March 21). The accident is said to have taken place around 150 kilometres outside Mecca.

Family members said they became concerned when Laskar stopped answering calls on the evening of Eid. Later, they contacted acquaintances abroad and were informed by a Bangladeshi co-worker that Laskar had met with a fatal accident during the return journey.

Back home in Cachar, scenes of grief unfolded at the victim’s residence as relatives, friends and neighbours gathered to console the bereaved family. His uncle, visibly devastated, said the family has not yet received any official communication regarding the incident.

Another family member shared, “We were told more details and photographs would be shared, but no one has contacted us again,” he said, adding that the family is still waiting for confirmation and further information from authorities.

The sudden death has cast a pall of gloom over the locality, with residents mourning the loss of the young man who had gone abroad in search of a livelihood.

Umrah is an Islamic pilgrimage to Mecca that can be performed at any time of the year, unlike Hajj, which has fixed dates. It involves a series of sacred rituals carried out at important religious sites and holds deep spiritual significance in Islam. Many pilgrims choose to undertake Umrah around Eid al-Fitr, as it is a period marked by heightened devotion, gratitude and celebration following the holy month of Ramadan, making the journey especially meaningful.
