Attack on Amar Chand Jain’s Driver in Kurkuri, Congress Blames BJP
The entry of former Congress MLA Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha in Katigorah as the BJP Candidate and the switch of former Katigorah MLA Amar Chand Jain from BJP to Congress have significantly impacted the politics ahead of 2026 Assembly Polls. Indian National Congress (INC) members of Katigorah have alleged that Kamalakhya is propagating politics of hate in Katigorah. In one incident on Thursday (April 2), Amar Chand Jain’s driver was attacked by alleged BJP supporter.
This incident of alleged election-related violence occurred in the Kurkuri Tea Estate area of Cachar’s Katigorah Constituency on Thursday afternoon.
According to reports, Congress candidate Amarchand Jain had gone to the tea estate for campaigning when a group of individuals, allegedly BJP supporters, surrounded his vehicle and objected to the campaign. They reportedly claimed that no Congress campaigning would be allowed in the area. Slogans of “Amar Chand Jain go back” and “Congress go back” were also heard.
The situation soon escalated, and the group allegedly attacked the driver of Jain’s vehicle and vandalised the car. There were also alleged attempts to assault the candidate physically. Sensing danger, Jain’s security personnel intervened and escorted him safely away from the spot.
A Congress leader reacting to the incident said, “We have contested and seen many elections, but never this type of violence. Our candidate went to Kurkuri to campaign, and while our supporters were waiting to welcome him, a few youths beat the driver and vandalised the car. Elections should be held in a free and fair manner to see who wins or loses, but this type of violence and muscle power can’t be tolerated. We can’t accept this violence and the politics of violence. I request the public to be the judge of it and vote judiciously in this election.”
The incident has allegedly created panic in the area, with political tensions rising across the constituency. The Congress party has lodged a complaint in connection with the matter.
