Hand Grenade, Italian-Made 9mm Pistol Recovered From Tenanted House In Silchar’s Ramnagar; Two From Manipur Detained

In a major police operation in Silchar’s Ramnagar area, Cachar Police detained one man and one woman from a tenanted house at FCI Lane and recovered arms, ammunition and suspicious documents from their possession.

The two detainees have been identified as Laishram Tikei Meitei and Monalisa Sanu, both reportedly residents of Churachandpur, Manipur. According to preliminary information from the ground, the duo had been living in the Ramnagar locality as tenants and had identified themselves as traders.

During the search operation, police recovered a hand grenade, an Italian-made 9mm pistol, five rounds of ammunition, and several suspicious documents, including multiple identity cards.

When questioned about the possession of the arms and ammunition, the male detainee claimed that he had been displaced from Churachandpur in Manipur and had kept the pistol and grenade “for safety”. He also admitted that he did not have any licence for the firearm.

Following the recovery of the grenade, the Assam Rifles bomb squad rushed to the spot. The grenade was confiscated by the team and is expected to be defused in a controlled and safe environment.

The operation triggered concern among residents of the area. Locals have raised suspicions over the presence of the two tenants in Silchar with such arms and ammunition, and some suspect that they may have links to an anti-social racket. However, police are yet to confirm any such link officially.

Senior police officials are investigating how the arms reached Silchar, why the duo was staying in the city with such weapons, and whether there are wider connections to the recovery.

Cachar Police is yet to issue an official statement on the matter. Further details are awaited.
