Udharbond: Man Held, Cow Rescued After Suspicious Vehicle Check

A man identified as Bajanlal Rabidas, accused of illegally transporting a cow, was detained by village defence personnel at Dumurghat in Udharbond area of Cachar on Sunday (24 May). According to sources, he was intercepted while allegedly transporting the cow secretly in a Magic vehicle through the area. Following suspicion over the transportation, members of the village defence force stopped the vehicle and detained the man along with the cow before informing the police.

According to reports, the incident took place in the Dumurghat area under Udharbond when locals and members of the village defence force noticed a cow being transported in the vehicle. The man allegedly failed to provide a clear explanation regarding the transportation, leading to suspicion among the locals.

Residents present at the spot told media persons that the driver initially showed a document carrying a Panchayat seal and signature when questioned about the transport. After this, villagers spoke to the owner of the cow, who was present at the spot, seeking clarification about its origin and purpose of transportation. The owner reportedly claimed that the cow had been brought from a relative’s house. However, locals alleged that he was unable to clearly identify the relative and later stated that the cow had been purchased and was being transported for agricultural purposes.

Some locals further claimed that during the discussion they told the owner that, being Hindus, they should treat cows properly and ensure better conditions during transportation. They alleged that the cow appeared to have been kept in poor condition inside the vehicle without proper food arrangements.

The village defence personnel later informed the police and handed over the accused along with the recovered cow to Udharbond Police for further investigation. Following the incident, tension and strong reactions were witnessed in parts of the Udharbond area, with locals gathering at the spot after the vehicle was intercepted. The matter is currently under police investigation.

Meanwhile, locals also alleged that the driver fled from the vehicle during the confrontation before police arrived at the scene.
