Sribhumi: Admission Scam Allegations Rock Karimganj College, Principal Says Disciplinary Committee Probing Claims

The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), Sribhumi Town Unit, has submitted a memorandum to the Principal of Karimganj College alleging irregularities in the admission process and seeking an investigation into the role of a student union office bearer.

In the memorandum, ABVP alleged that Pritam Das, Cultural Secretary of the Karimganj College Students’ Union and a member of NSUI, demanded money from prospective students in exchange for facilitating admission to the college. The organisation further claimed that the alleged activities may have involved other student union office bearers, including the General Secretary and Vice President.

ABVP stated that it possesses an audio recording which it claims contains a conversation related to the alleged admission-for-money arrangement. According to the organisation, the recording forms part of the evidence submitted along with the memorandum.

An audio clip shared with Barak Bulletin and claimed by ABVP to be a telephonic conversation allegedly involving Pritam Das was reviewed. In the recording, one person is heard enquiring about admission for a student from an economically weaker family and asking how much money would be required. The other person, whom ABVP identifies as Pritam Das, is heard suggesting an amount of Rs 6,000 to Rs 7,000 after being repeatedly asked to specify a figure. The caller then requests a reduction in the amount, citing the family’s financial condition.

Speaking to the media, ABVP members alleged that they had been aware of the purported scam for some time but lacked evidence to substantiate their claims. They said the recently obtained audio recording prompted them to formally approach the college administration.

They called for a thorough investigation to identify all individuals allegedly involved and sought appropriate action against those found responsible. The organisation also appealed to the district administration to look into the matter.

Speaking to Barak Bulletin, Principal Rajat Subhra Paul said that the allegations had surfaced among students and that the college administration had received a memorandum regarding the matter. He stated that the institution’s disciplinary committee was examining the allegations and reviewing the materials submitted to it.

Referring to the audio clip circulated by ABVP, Paul said he had listened to the recording but could not independently verify the identity of the individuals heard in it. While ABVP has claimed that one of the voices belongs to Pritam Das, the matter is currently under scrutiny by the disciplinary committee, he added.

The Principal further stated that appropriate action would be taken against anyone found guilty following the inquiry. However, as the investigation is ongoing, he declined to comment further on the matter at this stage.
