`District-wide crackdown on theft leads to 17 arrests in Hailakandi`

A district-wide anti-theft operation conducted by Hailakandi Police has resulted in the arrest of 17 suspected thieves and the recovery of several items believed to be linked to recent theft cases reported across the district.

The operation was launched following a series of reported theft incidents that had taken place in different parts of Hailakandi over the past one to two weeks. According to police, reports of property thefts and thefts from temples had been received from multiple locations, prompting authorities to initiate a coordinated crackdown.

Acting on instructions from the Superintendent of Police, Hailakandi, Amitava Sinha, police teams carried out simultaneous raids across the district on the same night. The operation was conducted under seven different police stations, with officers targeting individuals suspected of involvement in recent theft cases.

Speaking about the operation, a police official stated that approximately 17 individuals were apprehended during the raids. According to the official, several of those arrested had previously been taken into custody during earlier anti-theft drives. Police alleged that after being released from jail, the individuals had once again become involved in similar criminal activities.

During the operation, police recovered a number of items from the possession of the suspects. These included mobile phones, a motorcycle, a gas cylinder, water pumps and various tools that investigators believe may have been used in carrying out thefts. Authorities said the recovered articles are being examined as part of the ongoing investigation into recent theft incidents reported from different parts of the district.

Video footage released by police showed the suspects assembled within the premises of the Office of the Superintendent of Police, Hailakandi. Several police personnel were seen standing alongside the detainees, while various recovered items were displayed on tables nearby.

The footage later showed police officers escorting the suspects out of the complex in groups. Officers were seen leading them toward waiting vehicles as the operation proceeded under police supervision.

Police said the arrests form part of a wider effort to curb theft-related crimes in the district. Investigators are continuing to examine whether the recovered items can be linked to specific complaints already registered at various police stations.

The arrested individuals have been produced before a court in Hailakandi. Police indicated that they would seek remand for further questioning as the investigation progresses.

Authorities have urged residents to continue reporting suspicious activities and theft-related incidents, stating that further operations may be conducted if required. The investigation is ongoing.
