Banned Cough Syrup Case: Key Accused Finally Nabbed in Udharbond

Police have arrested another person in connection with a case involving the seizure of a large quantity of banned cough syrup and tablets in Cachar district.

The arrested person has been identified as 25-year-old Pintu Kumar Mahato, son of Rambahadur Mahato, a resident of Baisai Chandpur in Darbhanga district of Bihar. He was arrested on Thursday during a joint operation conducted by Kokrajhar Police and Udharbond Police based on specific intelligence inputs.

According to police sources, although Pintu is a resident of Bihar, he had been staying in a rented house at Pangram in Udharbond. Police said he owns a warehouse named Sandia Drugs Distributor at Goshaipur in Udharbond.

The arrest is linked to a case registered on June 3. Acting on a tip-off, a team led by Udharbond Police Station Officer-in-Charge S.S. Sim Timung conducted an operation and intercepted a magic vehicle on the Latigram stretch of the national highway. The vehicle was allegedly transporting a large quantity of narcotic cough syrup and tablets from Sandia Drugs Distributor at Goshaipur Five Mile.

Following the seizure, police arrested the vehicle’s driver, Gias Uddin Laskar. Since then, efforts had been underway to trace and arrest Pintu Kumar Mahato, who was suspected to be connected to the case.

Police sources further stated that Mahato is also facing a separate case at Gossaigaon Police Station in Kokrajhar district.

Investigators believe that the latest arrest could help police gather more information about the alleged network involved in the illegal transportation and distribution of banned pharmaceutical substances.

Further investigation is underway.
