Cachar Police Strike Again, Two Alleged Fake Doctors Land Behind Bars Overnight
Cachar Police on Thursday night (June 25) arrested two alleged fake doctors who were reportedly practising allopathic medicine using medical registration numbers that did not belong to them, officials said.
Speaking to the media, Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Rajat Kumar Pal said they received a Zero FIR from the Assam Police CID the night before yesterday. The complaint had been lodged by the Assam Medical Council after it found that Bikram Singha was allegedly posing as a doctor at Tarapur, Raigarh, Manipurbasti in Silchar.
Following the complaint, police immediately took Bikram Singha into custody. A case has been registered against him under Sections 316(2), 319(2), 336(2), 340(2), 125 and 271 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). These provisions relate to cheating by personation, forgery and the use of forged documents, making false claims, acts endangering human life or personal safety, and disobeying legal directions issued by public authorities.
ASP Pal said the accused was allegedly practising allopathic medicine using a medical registration number that was not issued in his name. Based on this finding, the Assam Medical Council lodged the complaint that led to the registration of the case.
In another operation on the same day, Cachar Police arrested Biswajit Singha of Kochudaram in connection with an older fake doctor case. According to the ASP, Biswajit had been absconding for several days before he was finally apprehended.
Police said both accused were allegedly practising allopathic medicine without valid authorisation. Further investigation is underway to determine the extent of their activities and whether any other persons were involved.
Cachar Police had carried out several operations against alleged fake doctors last year, leading to multiple arrests. The latest action marks the continuation of the police’s crackdown on unauthorised medical practice.
Notably, the case against Bikram Singha began with a Zero FIR received from the Assam Police CID. A Zero FIR is a First Information Report that can be registered at any police station regardless of where the alleged offence took place. It is later transferred to the police station with the appropriate jurisdiction for investigation. The provision is intended to ensure that complaints are recorded and acted upon without unnecessary delay.
