Silchar Shocker! Mother Leaves Baby at Hospital, Vanishes Without a Trace
An infant of nearly one year has been left unattended at Silchar’s S.M. Dev Civil Hospital after the child’s mother handed the baby to a stranger and disappeared. The incident took place at around 10 am on Sunday (July 12) in the hospital canteen. As of noon, more than two hours had passed and the mother had still not been traced.
Addressing the media, Shikha Bauri, a patient attendant at the hospital, said an unknown woman, approximately 20 years of age, approached her in the canteen and requested her to hold her child for a moment while she used the washroom. The mother had been alone with the child when she made the request. When the woman did not return after some time, Shikha began looking for her. The washroom was searched but the woman was nowhere to be found.
Shikha then narrated the incident to a hospital staff member named Rahim. The supervisor was subsequently informed, who in turn informed the superintendent. The superintendent directed that the matter be reported to the police. However, police arrived at the hospital more than two hours after the incident was first reported, by which time the mother had still not been found.
The hospital’s CCTV cameras were unable to capture the incident. The mother had also not registered herself at the hospital office, leaving authorities with no record of her identity or contact details. The woman is believed to be approximately 20 years of age and was alone with the child at the time of the incident, with no other person accompanying her.
The infant will now be handed over to Childline, which will look into the matter and take appropriate steps for the child’s care. The case remains under investigation and the whereabouts of the mother are yet to be established.
