13-Year-Old Boy Killed After Auto Rickshaw Plunges Into Ravine in Sribhumi, Three Injured

A 13-year-old boy lost his life and three others were injured after an auto rickshaw plunged into a deep ravine along the Patharkandi Ratabari PWD Road in Assam’s Sribhumi district on Saturday afternoon (July 18).

The deceased has been identified as Mehbub Hossain. According to police, his mother, maternal uncle and another person were also injured in the accident. Mehbub’s mother and maternal uncle were shifted to Silchar Medical College and Hospital after their condition was reported to be critical. The third injured person is undergoing treatment at Karimganj Civil Hospital.

Police said the accident took place near the Dohalia Pahar View Point in the Chagikhouri area when the auto rickshaw, bearing registration number AS-10-AC-0791, was returning from the family’s maternal relatives’ house. The driver allegedly lost control of the vehicle, causing it to roll nearly 200 feet down a hillside ravine.

Local residents, along with personnel from Ratabari Police Station, rushed to the spot and rescued the injured before arranging their treatment. Police later recovered the body of the deceased and sent it to the district hospital for post-mortem examination.

Sources said Mehbub Hossain was the nephew of Farij Uddin, a member of the Kajirbazar Paldahar Gram Panchayat.

The incident has cast a pall of grief over the locality. Police have launched an investigation into the circumstances leading to the accident.
