‘We Are Afraid to Step Outside’: Cachar Villagers Demand Action After Jackal Attack Injures Eight

Eight people, including a child, were injured after a pack of jackals allegedly attacked residents in Harinagar Part III, a border village under Katigorah constituency in Assam’s Cachar district, early on Wednesday (August 5). Four of the injured are reported to be in critical condition and have been admitted to Silchar Medical College and Hospital (SMCH) for treatment.

According to information available, the incident took place in the early hours of Wednesday when a woman stepped outside to use the toilet. She was reportedly attacked by a pack of jackals. Hearing her cries for help, other members of her family rushed out to rescue her. The animals then allegedly attacked them as well.

The attack left eight people injured, including a child and three women. Local residents immediately rescued the victims and took them to Katigorah Model Hospital for treatment.

Following preliminary medical examination, doctors referred four of the injured to Silchar Medical College and Hospital after assessing their condition as critical. They have been identified as Rajia Begum, Ahad Uddin, Jabbrul Uddin and Intajur Rahman. The remaining injured are also undergoing treatment.

The incident has triggered fear among residents of Harinagar and nearby border areas. Locals have urged the Forest Department and the district administration to take immediate steps to prevent further attacks.

Speaking to the media, a local resident said jackals have frequently been seen in the area over the past few months. He alleged that the animals attacked women who had gone outside in the morning to carry out their daily chores. According to him, the victims are residents of Harinagar Part III.

The resident further said people in the village are now afraid to step outside, and many children are unable to attend schools and madrasas because of the fear of another attack. He appealed to the administration and the Forest Department to visit the area, assess the situation and take necessary action. He also demanded financial assistance for the injured women to help cover their treatment expenses.
