
UNLF (P) Cadre Arrested from Cachar in Extortion Case, Manipur Police Say
A 47-year-old alleged cadre of the United National Liberation Front (P) was arrested from his residence in Gossaipur Part-I under Udharbond police station in Cachar district on Friday, according to the Manipur Police.
The arrested man has been identified as Akoijam Shankar Singha, alias Chepta, alias Yumshangba. Manipur Police said security forces arrested him from his residence in Silchar on August 7.
According to the police, Singha was involved in alleged extortion from truck drivers travelling along National Highway 37 between Silchar and Imphal, particularly at various locations in Jiribam town. Police also alleged that he was involved in extortion-related activities in the Jiribam area.
The arrest was carried out by personnel from Jiribam Police, who conducted the operation at the accused’s residence in Gossaipur.
The development comes amid security operations against insurgent groups and extortion networks operating in and around Jiribam and the Silchar-Imphal corridor.
Manipur Police announced the arrest on social media. The allegations against Singha are based on the police statement, and further legal proceedings are expected to establish the details of the case.
