MP Parimal Suklabaidya Seeks Seven Major Road Projects for Silchar and Barak Valley

Silchar Lok Sabha MP Parimal Suklabaidya met Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari in New Delhi on Thursday (August 13) and submitted proposals for seven major road infrastructure projects in and around the Silchar constituency.

During the meeting, Suklabaidya raised concerns over traffic congestion and the condition of key roads in Silchar and the wider Barak Valley. He said better road connectivity was important for healthcare, education, trade, agriculture, employment and the movement of essential goods and services.

The seven proposals submitted by the MP include four-laning and upgradation of several existing roads, along with the construction of a new bypass.

The proposals are:

– SH-39: Four-laning of the approximately 22-km stretch from Silchar Medical College and Hospital to Dwarbond Bazar.
– NH-306: Four-laning of the 7-km stretch from Rangirkhari Point to Sonabarighat.
– NH-37: Four-laning of the 6-km corridor from Capital Point to Silchar ISBT.
– New Greenfield Alignment: Construction of a 12.65-km bypass from Silchar Annapurna Bridge to NH-27 at Dolu Bazar.
– SH-38: Upgradation of the 28.5-km E&D Colony to Kalain stretch to four lanes.
– NH-37, Kashipur Route: Widening of a 13-km stretch.
– NH-37, Rongpur Route: Upgradation of a 12-km stretch in the densely populated agricultural area.

Suklabaidya also raised the status of road proposals that had received in-principle approval for National Highway development during 2017-18. He requested the Union Minister to expedite the formal approvals and sanctions for these projects.

According to the MP’s office, Gadkari heard the issues raised during the meeting and assured Suklabaidya that the Ministry would examine the roads that had earlier received in-principle approval and work towards expediting the required processes.

The Union Minister also assured the MP that concerns regarding the repair and improvement of critical State Highways in Barak Valley would be communicated to the Assam Government for necessary action.

The proposed Silchar Annapurna Bridge to Dolu Bazar bypass is intended to divert heavy freight traffic away from the city, while the proposed widening of existing routes is expected to address congestion and improve road safety if the projects receive the necessary approvals and funding.

Suklabaidya said the proposed road projects could strengthen connectivity between Silchar, other parts of Barak Valley and neighbouring states, while supporting the movement of people, agricultural produce and commercial goods.

The proposals will now require examination and approval through the relevant government processes before any construction or upgrading work can begin.
