Two Killed in Dholai Road Accident as School Van Collides With Auto

Two people, including a three-year-old girl, were killed in a road accident at Pakai Beel in Dholai on the Silchar-Aizawl National Highway on Monday. The victims were travelling in an auto-rickshaw when it collided head-on with a school van.

The deceased have been identified as Bebul Uddin and his three-year-old granddaughter, Suhana Akhtar. The two were reportedly related as grandfather and granddaughter.

Two other passengers, including Suhana’s mother and maternal uncle, were seriously injured in the accident. They were taken to Silchar Medical College and Hospital for treatment and are reported to be in a critical condition.

According to information available, the four members of the family were travelling from Panchayat Road in Silchar towards Dholai in an auto-rickshaw when the accident took place in the Pakai Beel area.

Police reached the spot after receiving information about the accident and recovered the bodies and rescued the injured before sending them to Silchar Medical College and Hospital.

A witness said he was in a field beside the road when he suddenly heard the sound of a collision. He said he and others immediately rushed to the spot, where they found an elderly man unconscious and a woman among the victims.

Another witness said the auto-rickshaw and the other vehicle were travelling in opposite directions before the collision. The witness also alleged that the auto-rickshaw driver was using a mobile phone while driving and was speaking on the phone when the accident occurred. He further claimed that one of the passengers was thrown out of the auto due to the impact.

The allegation regarding mobile phone use while driving has not been independently verified. The exact cause of the accident is yet to be officially established.

The incident has left the victims’ family and residents in the area in shock.
