Kalain: Rare Slow Loris Rescued in Kalain College Road, Rescuer Injured by Bite

A rare slow loris was rescued from a residential area in Kalain, Cachar, on Tuesday (August 25) night after it was spotted inside a house compound, with one local youth suffering serious injuries while trying to rescue the animal.

The incident took place at around 9 pm near College Road in Kalain, where residents spotted the animal sitting on the boundary wall of a house belonging to Sudip Nath.

Several locals gathered at the spot after news of the unusual animal spread through the area. Many residents said they had never seen such an animal before and initially could not identify it.

Local youth Pradip Baishnab then tried to rescue the animal and place it inside a sack. However, the slow loris bit his hand while he was attempting to catch it, leaving him seriously injured. Another local youth, Pintu Das, later managed to safely put the animal inside the sack.

The Forest Department was informed and its personnel reached the location shortly afterwards. The animal was taken into their custody for safe handling and is expected to be shifted to an appropriate wildlife facility.

Speaking to the media, a representative of the forest department described the slow loris as a rare animal and said it may have entered the locality from nearby forest areas. He also said that people bitten by the animal should seek medical attention and receive the necessary treatment.

A local resident said the animal was popularly referred to in the area as Lojyapati Banor, meaning “shy monkey”, and added that it was the first time many residents had seen such a creature.

According to locals, some people suffered injuries from the animal’s defensive bites while trying to catch it. Baishnab was taken to Kalain Hospital by Forest Department personnel for immediate treatment. After receiving preliminary medical care, doctors reportedly advised him to seek further treatment at Silchar Medical College and Hospital.

The Forest Department said the slow loris is a rare wild animal and is not usually seen in human settlements. Officials believe it may have strayed into the locality from nearby forested areas, although the exact circumstances are yet to be determined.
