Tin Roof Cut, Premium Phones Worth Up to Rs. 20 Lakh Stolen from Silchar Mobile Shop

A daring theft at a mobile phone shop in Silchar’s Chamra Godam area has triggered concern among local traders, with premium mobile phones and cash estimated to be worth between Rs. 15 lakh and Rs. 20 lakh allegedly stolen after thieves cut through the tin roof of the establishment.

The incident took place at Connecting World, a mobile phone shop located in the middle of the town. The entire incident was captured on the shop’s CCTV cameras.

According to the shop owner, he was informed in the morning that the tin roof of his shop had been cut and the premises had been breached. After arriving at the shop and confirming the break-in, he immediately checked the CCTV footage.

He said the footage suggests that two people may have been involved in the theft and estimated that they could be between 25 and 30 years old. One of the suspects was allegedly seen entering the shop by descending with the help of a rope.

According to the owner, the accused appeared to have selectively targeted premium mobile phones. The suspect allegedly checked several display units before taking a bag and filling it with expensive phones, including iPhones and other high-end devices.

The preliminary assessment of the loss is between Rs. 15 lakh and Rs. 20 lakh, apart from some cash allegedly taken from the shop. The owner said the exact value of the stolen items is still being assessed.

Another person associated with the shop said this was not the first time they had faced such an incident. He claimed that a motorcycle had earlier been stolen, while another motorcycle had previously been stolen from his residence. He also alleged that the shop had faced theft in the past but that they had not received justice in those cases.

The shop owner further alleged that drug and ganja addiction was common in the area and expressed suspicion that people involved in substance abuse could be behind the latest theft. However, there is currently no official confirmation linking the crime to drug use.

The owner said this was the third time he had faced theft and appealed to the administration and police to take strict action and ensure better security.

“Our shop is located in the middle of the town, and if such a theft can take place here, the matter needs to be seriously scrutinised,” he said.

Another person present at the site also expressed suspicion that the shop may have been deliberately targeted. Police reached the spot after receiving information about the incident and have begun an investigation.
