Train Trouble Continues in Barak Valley: Katakhal-Bairabi Section Hit by Soil Erosion, Several Trains Cancelled

Heavy rainfall has caused soil erosion near the railway track between Jamira in Assam and Bairabi in Mizoram, affecting around 70 metres of track and disrupting train services in the section.

The erosion occurred on the evening of September 3 following heavy rainfall along the Katakhal-Bairabi section. Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has started restoration work at the affected site and is closely monitoring the situation.

According to NFR, the soil erosion has affected an area extending up to 40 metres from the centre of the railway track. The affected location has no direct road access, making it difficult for railway personnel and machinery to reach the site. The railway has said that restoration may take some time because of the site conditions and accessibility challenges.

As a result of the disruption, several trains scheduled to operate on September 4 and 5 have been cancelled or partially cancelled.

The cancelled trains include:

Train No. 15609 Guwahati-Sairang Express, scheduled to commence its journey on September 4.

Train No. 55667 Silchar-Bairabi Express, scheduled to commence its journey on September 4.

Train No. 13126 Sairang-Kolkata Express, scheduled to commence its journey on September 4.

Train No. 55668 Bairabi-Silchar Express, scheduled to commence its journey on September 4 and 5.

Train No. 55669 Silchar-Sairang Express, scheduled to commence its journey on September 4 and 5.

Train No. 55670 Sairang-Silchar Express, scheduled to commence its journey on September 5.

Two other trains have been short-originated from Hailakandi.

Train No. 15610 Sairang-Guwahati Express scheduled to commence on September 4 will originate from Hailakandi instead. Its service between Sairang and Hailakandi will remain cancelled.

Similarly, Train No. 20507 Sairang-Anand Vihar Terminal Express, scheduled to commence on September 4, will also originate from Hailakandi, with its service between Sairang and Hailakandi cancelled.

The latest disruption comes as NFR is already working to restore normal train operations through the Lumding-Badarpur Hill Section following the track formation issues at New Harangajao. While Line No. 2 at New Harangajao is expected to be restored by September 5, another weather-related problem has now emerged in the Jamira-Bairabi section, where heavy rainfall has caused soil erosion near the railway track, further affecting train services in the region.
