Sribhumi: 15-Year-Old Mystery Reopens as Three Unidentified Bodies Are Exhumed for DNA Test

Three unidentified bodies are being exhumed from a burial ground in Sribhumi district nearly 15 years after they were buried, following a court direction to establish their identities through DNA testing.

The exhumation is linked to the case of a teacher from Agartala, Tripura, who went missing in 2011. Tripura Police has reached Sribhumi as part of the investigation to determine whether one of the unidentified bodies could be that of the missing teacher.

According to information available in the case, the teacher had gone missing from Agartala in 2011 and never returned home. There were allegations that he had been kidnapped and that the kidnappers had demanded Rs 25 lakh from his family for his release. It was further alleged that he was killed after the family was unable to pay the amount. These allegations are part of the investigation and have not been independently established.

During the same period, an unidentified body was recovered from the Sonbeel area of Sribhumi (then Karimganj). After the necessary legal procedures, Sribhumi Police buried the body at a local burial ground.

However, authorities have now encountered a challenge in identifying the particular grave. Three unidentified bodies were buried in the same area around that period, making it difficult to establish which grave, if any, contains the body of the missing teacher.

Following the court’s direction, all three graves are therefore being opened so that samples can be collected for DNA testing.

The DNA samples collected from the exhumed remains will be compared with samples from family members of the missing teacher in Agartala. The results are expected to help determine the identity of the remains and establish whether there is any connection with the teacher who went missing in 2011.

The DNA examination and further investigation will be crucial in establishing the identity of the three unidentified bodies and clarifying the circumstances surrounding the teacher’s disappearance.
