Assam Legislative Assembly asks employees to avoid wearing jeans and T-shirts, ‘any fail can invite strict action’

Assam Legislative Assembly has issued an order stating the dress code for all the employees and members of the assembly. The order has directed employees to avoid wearing informal dresses like jeans, t-shirts and leggings while on duty. This also includes the journalists while the Assembly is in session. This order was passed by the Principal Secretary of the Assam Legislative Assembly. 

The order was issued with the directives of the Speaker of the house, Biswajit Daimary and the list of employees who have to adhere to the dress code includes, daily wage, fixed pay and monthly honorarium basis. Irrespective of gender, they have to wear formal clothes or any traditional attire while the sessions of the Assembly are ongoing.

The release by the Principal Secretary stated, “All employees should attend office on all working days with formal attire only (salwar suit/saree/mekhela chador, formal shirt-pant and not casual attire such as T-shirts, jeans, leggings etc.). However, traditional dress of any community of Assam should be worn every Wednesday as desired by the employee.”

The order also included details of attendance for the employees and their work timings. About the dress code, it further mentioned, “any employee, who fails to comply with the instructions stated above, shall be liable for strict action.” Earlier in the month of May, the government had asked its officials to avoid wearing t-shirts and jeans, which the government treats as informal dress to any official functions and VVIP programs.
