Badarpur: Illegal Embankments Torn Down by MLA Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha
In a major anti-encroachment drive aimed at preventing artificial flooding, newly elected Katigorah MLA Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha personally joined local residents and the administration to remove several illegal bamboo embankments built for fishing in the Chauli Beel and Deochora Beel areas of Badarpur.
According to allegations raised by local residents, a section of fish traders had allegedly constructed illegal bamboo embankments across natural water channels in the wetlands for catching fish. Residents claimed that these structures obstructed the natural flow of water and blocked drainage routes, leading to severe waterlogging in several parts of Badarpur even after moderate rainfall.
Frustrated by repeated incidents of artificial flooding and damage to property, affected residents approached the MLA seeking immediate intervention. Taking note of the seriousness of the issue, Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha launched an eviction and clearance operation on Sunday (17 May) along with local residents, an Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC), and personnel from Badarpur Police Station.
During the operation, the MLA was seen personally participating in the removal of the illegal bamboo structures. With the support of the administration and locals, the blocked water passages were cleared to restore the natural flow of water in the area.
Speaking to the media after the drive, the MLA strongly criticised those involved in the alleged illegal activities. “People’s property got damaged because of these illegal embankments. For personal business interests, they are putting the lives and property of others at risk. This will not be tolerated,” he said.
He also issued a stern warning against any future illegal fishing activities or actions that may harm the environment and public interest. The MLA stated that even stricter action would be taken in coordination with the administration if such activities continue in the region.
The MLA also pointed out that traditional fishing practices usually involve the use of fishing nets that allow water to flow naturally while preventing fish from escaping. During the drive, Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha was seen advising one of the fishermen to use nets instead of constructing bamboo barricades that block natural drainage channels and contribute to artificial flooding in the area.
