Bangladeshi Thieves Attack BSF and Farmers on India-Bangladesh Border in Cachar
The international Border with Bangladesh in Cachar’s Katigorah sector witnessed high tension on Thursday evening (July 31) after a group of Bangladeshi miscreants allegedly attacked Border Security Force (BSF) personnel and Indian civilians near the Kinna Khal border outpost. One BSF jawan and two Indian nationals sustained injuries in the assault, with reports claiming that a BSF rifle was also damaged.
According to sources, repair work on the barbed wire fencing along the Indo-Bangla border in Katigorah has been ongoing for the past two months. On Thursday afternoon, taking advantage of heavy rain, two Bangladeshi thieves allegedly crossed into Indian territory near Kinna Khal BOP and attempted to steal iron materials kept for the fencing work.
BSF personnel on duty intervened, but the duo tried to flee with the stolen items, prompting the jawans to chase them. Local farmers Pabitramohan Das (66) and Nishitranjan Deb (50), who were tending their fields outside the fencing with BSF’s permission, witnessed the incident and ran to assist the jawans.
Eyewitnesses stated that as the chase progressed, a group of 8–10 Bangladeshi men armed with sharp weapons arrived and attacked the BSF team. In the attack, a jawan suffered a deep wound on his hand after being struck with a spade. He was rushed to Katigorah Model Hospital, where doctors confirmed he required three stitches. Pabitramohan Das’s left thumb was partially severed, while Nishitranjan Dev sustained injuries on his hand from a stick blow.
“The miscreants struck the jawan’s rifle with sharp weapons, damaging it,” alleged Pabitramohan and Nishitranjan, adding that they too were attacked while attempting to help the BSF. “The Bangladeshis also threatened that they would kill us and BSF jawans if they held a flag march next time”, they further added.
While the BSF has not issued an official statement as of reporting time, Katigorah Police Station Officer-in-Charge Joseph V. Kevum confirmed the incident.
The incident has created panic among border residents, who claim Bangladeshi thieves frequently target Indian farmland located beyond the fencing. Locals allege that the BSF’s strict action against such activities might have provoked Thursday’s attack.
