Barak River Rising, Cachar DDMA Issues Flood Advisory Amid Heavy Rainfall

Amid continuous downpours and a rising Barak River, the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) of Cachar has issued a public advisory warning of a potential flood-like situation in the district, particularly urban flooding in low-lying areas of Silchar.

The advisory, issued by Mridul Yadav, the District Commissioner and Chairperson of DDMA, follows an alert from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) and two days of incessant rainfall across the region. Authorities have observed a steady increase in the water level of the Barak River, raising concerns over possible flooding.

The DDMA has urged citizens to avoid unnecessary movement in waterlogged areas, especially during heavy rain, and to keep electrical appliances switched off with valuables placed on elevated surfaces. Residents in flood-prone localities have been asked to stay alert and ready for potential evacuation.

“Do not attempt to drive or walk through flooded streets. It’s extremely risky and could lead to accidents or people getting stranded,” the advisory cautioned.

People have also been advised to prepare emergency kits with dry food, drinking water, and essential medicines, and to keep mobile phones charged for communication. The DDMA emphasised the importance of following official updates and refraining from spreading rumours or panic.

All departments concerned have been placed on high alert, and the District Administration is monitoring the situation closely. Citizens can reach out for emergency assistance via landline numbers 03842-239249 and 03842-234005 or mobile number 94016-24141. Emails may also be sent to doma-cachar@assam.gov.in.

The DDMA reiterated that this advisory was issued in public interest to safeguard lives and property amid the deteriorating weather conditions.
