BJP Names 38 Candidates for Silchar Civic Polls, Leaves 4 Wards Out of List

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Assam Pradesh, has announced 38 candidates for the first Silchar Municipal Corporation election, leaving Ward 16, Ward 24, Ward 25 and Ward 26 out of its latest candidate list.

The list was declared on Tuesday, September 8, following a meeting of the BJP’s State Election Committee. The official notice states that the candidates were declared by Assam BJP president Dilip Saikia.

The Silchar Municipal Corporation election is scheduled to be held on October 3, with voting across all 42 wards. However, the BJP’s latest declaration names candidates for only 38 wards.

The omission of Wards 16, 24, 25 and 26 comes amid BJP state president Dilip Saikia’s earlier indication that the party could have local-level seat arrangements with the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) in some wards. However, the BJP has not confirmed whether these four wards are part of any such arrangement.

The list includes candidates under different reservation categories, including Open, Women, Scheduled Caste (SC) and Scheduled Caste Women.

The announcement comes two days after Saikia said in Silchar that the BJP would finalise its candidates following meetings of the party’s Election Committee and Management Committee in Guwahati.

At a press conference at the BJP office in Itkhola on September 6, Saikia had said the final candidate list was expected to be released on September 8. He had also expressed confidence that the BJP would secure a two-thirds majority in the 42-member corporation.

Saikia had said the BJP’s campaign would focus on development and civic services, including a proposed “One City, One Digital Platform” for municipal services and measures to address Silchar’s recurring artificial flooding.

The first Silchar Municipal Corporation election will be held on October 3 and will determine the first elected corporation of the newly constituted civic body.
