1000 kgs of Burmese Supari hidden within tons of fruits; Karimganj Police nabs truck coming from Mizoram
Areca nut transported illegally from Burma by bypassing the taxation system is a crime that Himanta Biswa Sarma has decided to go after since the day he assumed the role of Chief Minister of the State. Police forces across the state, especially in Barak Valley have been alerted to work against the nexus.
One of the most successful Police Formations within Assam, the Karimganj Police lead by Padmanabh Baruah has strike again. After being praised for his raids against heroin, Additional SP of Karimganj, Partha Protim Das again decided to spend a night on the road.
Based on a secret tip off, Das along with his team launched an overnight operation to intercept the truck loaded with Burmese Supari. At the Mondomala Bypass, in Patharkandi, the cops stopped the truck and initially it looked like another truck loaded with fruits.
However, the cops continued searching the truck and after removing the layers of fruits, they found the nuts that they were looking for.
Police sources informed that the trucks were loaded in Mizoram and through Mamit district of the neighbouring states, the truck travelled to Karimganj. The Police has also managed to apprehend two individuals including the owner of the truck to further investigate the matter.
After preliminary assessment, the officials are estimating the consignment to be worth a thousand kilograms. The truck, as per Police sources, was delivering the consignment to a Guthka factory.
