The election fever is on throughout the length and breadth of the country. The Election Commission of India has already announced that the upcoming Lok Sabha elections will be held in seven phases. In Assam, the polls will take place in three-phase – first on April 11 then on April 18 and the last phase on April 24. Voters from Silchar and Karimganj will cast their votes on April 18, 2019.

11,93,908 registered voters in Cachar are eligible to cast their votes on April 18, 2019. 1461 polling stations in Cachar will conduct the polls. The deputy commissioner of Cachar, Laya Madduri held a meeting at her office and said that the preparations are on for the upcoming polls.

The DC informed that 20 of the 1461 polling stations have been identified as “hypersensitive” and the district administration will deploy an adequate number of forces in those polling stations. Madduri further added that those 20 polling stations have been singled out on the basis of certain observations observed during the Assembly elections. “Those polling stations registered 90 per cent of the votes being cast for one particular party in the last assembly election. Thus the election commission has asked to keep a close watch on those,” she added.

As a part of the preparation, the District Administration is conducting mock drills throughout the “length and breadth of the district”. In the mock drill voters cast vote through EVMs and newly introduced Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) which would be introduced in all of the 1461 polling stations in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. “This drill has been done among 94,856 electorates” informs Madduri. She added that this drill will continue until the notifications are issued.

An all-party meeting was also convened by the Deputy Commissioner where the code of conduct was discussed in details.

Representatives of each political parties were briefed about the dos and don’ts. The last date to submit nomination is going to be March 26 and the scrutiny is on March 27.
