17 Bighas Of Debottar Land Freed From Encroachment In Cachar
The Cachar district administration on Thursday (September 18) carried out an eviction drive at Mahadevpur Part III under Katigorah constituency, reclaiming 17 bighas of Debottar (temple-owned) land from alleged illegal possession.
The eviction was conducted in the presence of Katigorah Circle Officer, Dr Robert Tolar, following reports that four non-Hindu families had been living on the land for several years. According to officials, the matter was initially flagged by local residents to North Sribhumi MLA Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha, who escalated it to the administration. An inquiry led by the Circle Officer confirmed the encroachment.
On Thursday morning, bulldozers were deployed to demolish pucca houses, bamboo groves, and trees that had been built on the land. The families of Abdul Gafur, Abdul Basit, Nurun Nessa, and Sayra Begum had allegedly occupied the 17 bighas of Debottar land. However, before the drive began, the residents vacated their homes and fled.
“The enquiry revealed that a few people had constructed homes on Debottar land without permission. The 17 bighas have now been made encroachment-free,” Dr Tolar said after the operation.
Out of a total of 143 bighas of Debottar land in Mahadevpur Part III, 17 bighas had been under illegal occupation. Following Thursday’s eviction, the administration demarcated the recovered land and placed red flags to mark its boundaries.
