20 lakh worth illegal timber seized in Cachar

Acting on a tip off, Cachar Forest Officials, in the wee hours of Wednesday, seized huge amount of teak timber which were being smuggled from Mizoram towards Guwahati.

Three trucks carrying 1250 pieces of illegal teak sawn timber (Approx. 5297 cu ft) coming from Mizoram were stopped and seized by Cachar Forest Division officials at Natunbazar area. The officials were headed by Cachar DFO Sunny Deo Choudhury. The market value of the seized timber is said to be around 20 lakhs.

Forest Officials also arrested the drivers of the truck and were later sent to Judicial custody. The names of the arrested persons are Mujibur Rehman, Nurul Alam and Jakhir Hussain.

It can be noted here that the roads of Barak Valley have become a green corridor for smuggling. Almost everyday illegal transported goods are seized. These raises questions that despite ‘nakas’ and check posts, how these trucks manage to enter? Who are helping them?
