299 people from Assam attended Tablighi Jamaat event in Delhi, Govt urges them to contact health centres

On Tuesday, Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that the government has a list of 299 people who attended the Tablighi Jamaat in Delhi from Assam. He also urged people to voluntarily contact health care centers if they have come back to the state.

The religious gathering that happened from March 13-15 in Alami Markaz Banglewali Masjid in Nizamuddin also featured guests from Malaysia, Indonesia, Saudi Arabia and Kyrgyzstan. With a number of positive cases emerging from the same gathering in Delhi and other cities, the authorities have been on high alert.

Earlier, the Health Minister of Assam, tweeted that people who attended the religious gathering should immediately call up the health care number. He then posted about the govt having collected the names of the people, and how district administrations have been alerted to put them under strict quarantine.

While the religious congregation took place before the nationwide lockdown was announced, it did violate Delhi state government order of restricting religious and public gatherings. Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has asked for a police case to be filed against the mosque administration for negligence. The Delhi police has even cordoned off a major area in Nizamuddin West in south Delhi on March 30, where over 200 people have shown the Covid-19 symptoms.

The government has decided to ramp up testing in 10 identified “hotspots” where “unusual” transmission has been detected. Of these, two — Dilshad Garden and Nizamuddin — are in Delhi, while other locations are Noida, Meerut, Bhilwara, Ahmedabad, Kasaragod, Pathanamthitta, Mumbai and Pune.
