4 students faint from heatwaves in Hailakandi, DC revises school timings from Monday

The extreme heatwave in the Barak Valley has taken a severe toll over the past month, resulting in one death and numerous cases of heat-related illnesses among students. The temperature in Hailakandi has been exceeding 38 degrees Celsius, with a real-feel temperature of 46 degrees according to AccuWeather data.

On May 17, students from Janata High School in Katigorah were rushed to the Primary Health Centre (PHC) after losing consciousness during class. Tragically, a teacher at Kalain’s Satya Ranjan College succumbed to heatstroke, emphasizing the grave impact of the heat.

The situation worsened today in the Katlicherra area of Hailakandi, where four students from Baldabaldi ME and LP schools fainted due to the unbearable heat. The affected students were immediately taken to the nearest health centre for treatment.

These incidents, all occurring during school hours, have prompted the state government to take action. The Education Minister of Assam, along with other state officials, has requested the District Commissioners to revise school timings.

In view of the notice from the Education Department, the District Magistrate of Hailakandi, Nisarg Hivare has issued a notice revising the school timings. The new timings to be followed by both government and private schools in Hailakandi District are as follows:

Lower Primary (L.P.) Schools: 7:30 AM to 12:15 PM
Upper Primary (U.P.) Schools: 7:30 AM to 12:45 PM
High Schools/Higher Secondary Schools/Senior Secondary Schools: 7:30 AM to 1:15 PM

This order will come into effect from May 27, 2024, and will remain in force until further notice. The adjustments aim to create a cooler and more conducive learning environment for students, ensuring their safety and well-being during the hottest parts of the day. The government’s prompt response aims to ensure the safety and well-being of students during this period of extreme weather. The district administration urges all schools to adhere to the new timings and prioritizes the health and safety of students amid the ongoing heatwave.
