“90% of the people arrested in Drug Cases across Assam are Muslim,” Siddique Ahmed; Why are Muslim youth committing “Haram” he questions
South Karimganj MLA and undoubtedly one of the most controversial leaders of recent times, Siddique Ahmed has brought serious accusations against the Assam Gana Parishad’s Karimganj President, Hilal Ahmed Khan. The district president Khan’s brother, Hussain Ahmed Khan is the prime accused and a hot topic of discussion in the state, after bring involved in the heroin smuggling case worth Rs 18 crore. Following that huge drug bust, MLA Siddique has made some serious accusations against the Karimganj AGP President and his family. Siddique Ahmed has made accusations against the Muslim community as well.
The Karimganj Police has arrested four individuals, Nurul Hussain, Zakir Hussain, Sahid Ahmed and Hussain Ahmed Khan on April 8 in the Ratabari area in connection with heroin smuggling. After that the investigation has revealed the involvement of AGP President’s brother, Hussain Ahmed Khan, Siddique Ahmed said, “What’s very surprising to me is that AGP District President’s brother gets caught and arrested with drugs worth eighteen crore rupees. It’s noteworthy that. AGP President or his brothers, all live together as a joint family. So in that situation, one brother must know what the other one is up to, at least in terms of the business they must know what the other is up to. The head of their family is the AGP President, I’m sure he knows about this drug business of his brother.”
He also mentioned about the lavish life of the AGP President’s brother and said, “One brother changes his car every other day, another gets into the drug business. The head of the family surely knows about all these businesses. In that situation, where a public representative, as well as a Zila Parishad member’s family, get involved in such businesses which harm society, that is very unfortunate. It saddens me to say that when we give power to the hands of those who tarnish the image of the society and mix such bad elements in the society, then this country is headed towards destruction. People must be aware of them and aware of their leaders’ activities”.
Siddique Ahmed has been recently suspended from the party by Assam Pradesh Congress for wasting his vote during Rajya Sabha elections instead of casting in favour of Congress candidate. He has been called “traitor” by the Youth Congress members Karimganj. In fact, many alleged that he has betrayed the trust bestowed upon him by the Muslim community in order to please the chief minister of Assam, Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma.
Ahmed has again sparked a controversy. He said 90% of the individuals caught with drugs belong to the Muslim Community. While one would want to call a drug smuggler a smuggler and not necessarily profile them religiously, the MLA does so. “Muslim youths of these days are much into drugs. Ninety per cent of the arrests made so far in drug-related cases are all Muslims. Hence, we must try to understand here why our religion’s youth are venturing towards drugs as a sort of income. I’ve seen many such cases of drug use where, if they don’t get drugs, they have severe withdrawal syndrome, their limbs become almost senseless and their body shrinks too. I was always very aware and against this,” he said.
Taking a further dive into religion, Siddique mentions, It is “haram” or the forbidden in Islam. “Our holy book bans even the touch of such substance like drugs which is considered Haram according to Hadis. If any follower of Islam uses drugs he is against the religion.”
