Out of 2.28 lakh NRC rejects only 1.25 lakh applicants submitted claims in Cachar

The extended deadline is just 15 days away and almost half the NRC rejects are yet to submit their claims in Cachar. As per district administration out of 2.28 lakh NRC rejects 1.25 have submitted their claim to get enrolled in the final draft of the National Register of Citizens. In a press conference at his office deputy commissioner of Cachar S Lakshmanan in presence of superintendent of Police Rakesh Roushan and other government officials stated that the ones who do not submit claims would not make it to the final draft at this stage.

The officials were of the opinion that the ambiguity in the initial stages slowed down the process a bit. There were a lot of confusion on the number of documents to be accepted and which is valid and which is not, “Once that was settled by the Supreme Court the claims and objection process picked up pace,” said Roushan.

A significant number of the rejects happened to be women who shifted to Assam after marriage. They need to produce document which needs to be verified by their native State government. “Initially other State governments were not that aware about NRC and the importance of the document but now due to Assam Government’s effort that gap is bridged,” informed Lakshmanan. As per his assessment at the current rate most of the NRC reject will end up submitting claims. He also asked the NRC officials to accept any and every government issued document.

More than 40 lakh residents of Assam were left out of the second draft of NRC published in July. The Supreme Court of India has given the rejects an opportunity to stake claim till December 31. Alongside claims residents of Assam can object inclusions if they believe that a particular individual or family managed to forge into the draft.
