Three persons sustained grievous injuries in a road mishap at Salgai under Patharkandi constituency in Karimganj district on Thursday.
According to sources, the incident took place around 9:30am this morning when Ajoy Kumar Singh (20) and P.H. Thoiba Singh (18), who were riding on a bike, lost control and hit Abdul Kayum on National Highway-8 at Salgai, around 102km from Silchar. Abdul, who was on another bike, was talking to a man on the roadside when he was hit by the bike.
As a result, the three of them suffered injuries. Ajoy and Thoiba hail from Karcharghat, while Abdul is a resident of Baithakhal.
The injured persons were immediately rushed to a hospital at Patharkandi, but considering Abdul’s critical condition he was later shifted to Silchar Medical College and Hospital. Receiving the news of the incident, Patharkandi MLA Krishnendu Paul, who is in Guwahati, contacted Lowairpua block Mandal president Kishore Choudhury and urged him to arrange help regarding treatment of the injured people.
An official of Bazaricherra police station said the two bikes were under police custody and further action would be followed after the medical report was available. The condition of Abdul was serious, as per last available reports.
Local residents have blamed the dilapidated condition of the highway, especially the stretch from Salgai to Hatikhira for the rise in accidents in the areas. They alleged that even though several mishaps had happened on the road in the recent past, no step was taken by the authorities.
Asked about this, Krishnendu Paul said he would go to Delhi with state BJP president Ranjeet Dass on Friday. He said he would raise the issue with Nitin Gadkari, union minister for road transport and highways and urge him so that the road is repaired soon.
