Gunman fires at BJP GP President Sukhendu Das; Condition critical

Haticherra Gaon Panchayat president, BJP’s Sukhendu Das is fighting with death in Silchar Medical College and Hospital.

Between 8:00 to 8:30 PM today evening, in the Lathigram area an unidentified gunman fired at Das from behind. Das was then immediately rushed to Silchar Medical College and Hospital where he is now being treated in the ICU. BJP’s district president Kaushik Rai is at the SMCH, giving us an update about Das’ health. Rai said, “His condition is critical.”

Udharbond MLA Mihir Shome said that he had a word with the Chief Minister of Assam, Sarbananda Sonowal, “The chief minister asked us to do everything possible to nab the culprit as soon as possible. I feel this heinous crime has been orchestrated to create unrest just before the elections,” he said.

Superintendent of Police, Cachar, MugdhaJyoti Dev Mahanta described the incident as sad and unlawful. He said, “The GP president attended an event and was on his way back when someone fired at him from behind. It is not yet clear who did it and why.” Mahanta further informed that, Das’ nephew, who was travelling with Das also got injured in the incident.

Das won the Panchayat elections in December and is serving his first term as GP President of Haticherra Gaon Panchayat.
