Association meets Rajdeep Roy, seeks help to save paper mills

The Cachar Paper Mill Officers and Supervisors’ Association, on Friday, met Silchar MP Rajdeep Roy and urged him to take up the matter of the two non-functional mills in Assam with the government so that the mills are revived and the pending salaries are paid soon.

The mills — Cachar Paper Mill at Panchgram in Hailakandi district and Nagaon Paper Mill at Jagiroad in Morigaon district — have been lying non-functional since October, 2015 and March, 2017 respectively. Their workers have not received their salaries for more than two years.

Dipak Chandra Nath, general secretary of the association, told Barak Bulletin on Friday that a team of the association met Rajdeep Roy and felicitated him on becoming the Member of Parliament (Lok Sabha). The association members urged him to take up the issue of the mills with the government so that the industrial units are made functional and the dues are cleared soon, Nath said.

In response, Roy told them that he will look into the matter and try his level best so that the issue gets resolved as early as possible, Nath said, and hoped the government would consider the matter with priority and initiate necessary steps soon to revive the mills and remit the pending salaries.

Association members including president Sonoth Prasad Roy, secretary (organisation) Anju Chanda and executive member Kishore Bhattacharjee were also present.

It may be mentioned that the Cachar Paper Project Workers’ Union had recently said that it would take a series of steps if the government does not initiate measures for revival of the mills and payment of the workers’ pending salaries by this month.
