1017 names in merit list while there are 550 seats; students agitating in front of GC College
It was not a very good morning for one of the most prestigious and premier education institutions in Barak Valley. Right in front of the main gate of Guru Charan College slogans like “GC College Hay Hay”, “GC College Murdabad” were raised today morning.
At around 11 AM, around sixty-seventy people gathered and blocked the main gate of GC College and started agitating. These are the students who just completed their higher secondary and have applied for a seat in GC College. The college administration had published merit lists for each and every faculty. While for Science, Commerce, BBA (TDC) there was a waiting list, in case of TDC – Arts a single list titled “Meri List (All) TDC Arts – I, 2019”. The 21-page merit list had 1017 names in it.
Yesterday, when the admission process began and students went there to get enrolled the situation became chaotic as there were fewer seats and more students. Students were told to come the next day and when they went a board placed next to the auditorium read “admission for general category is over as the seats are full.” Now, the students got irked as they had they were denied a seat despite having names on the merit list.
“We’ve not applied for any other college since our name was there in the merit list. Now we are left with very little options as admission process in other government college is over and not all can afford private college,” said a student agitating in front of GC College. He added, “I don’t know how our future is going to look like, we don’t want to wait for another year to start our graduation.”.
Few students even alleged a foul play, a student protesting said, “All the students who completed their HS from GC College are given admission even if their percentage is as low as 30% but our percentage is much higher but still we’re enrolled.”
Students of the college also joined the agitation, one of them went on to mark the Principal as ‘Irresponsible’ as he was not in the office today. He said, “The protest is going on and will not stop until the students are granted admission into the college. Memorandums will be submitted to the Office of The Prime Minister, Chief Minister of Assam and other officials. We will inform everybody about the irresponsible handling of a serious matter like admission,” said the student.
Like any other year this year too the number of applicants was record-breaking. 1017 number of students applied in Arts stream only; 942 applicants in Science stream, 408 in Commerce and 61 in BBA program.
Till the last update we received from the premise of the college, the agitation is still going on and the administration is yet to make an official comment.
