Roads are not godowns to stack building materials; PWD issues warning

How many times do you see bricks, stones, sand and other building-construction-materials stacked roadside in most busy areas of Silchar town? It is certain that you must have lost count as roads have become godowns almost everywhere. The traffic movement in the heart of the town during peak hour is so slow that it would lose a race with snails. The roads are a combination of never-ending queue of private vehicles, auto-rickshaws, tuk-tuks and pedestrians walking in the middle as roadside and road bumps are for the landlords and contractors to stack their building construction materials.

It looks like the PWD has finally decided to take some action against the ones who consider roadsides to be their godowns. The executive engineer of PWD has issued a notice which states that, “It has been observed that some persons in various places of Silchar town areas have illegally encroached the roadside and side bumps by way of stacking of construction material such as brick, stone earth, sand etc. creating nuisance to the pedestrians causing traffic congestion.”

The PWD’s notice added, “Considering the facts and circumstances it is for the information of all concerned that the construction materials are removed from the roadside and side bumps of Silchar town areas immediately.” If it is not done immediately then as per the notice, the PWD will use its resources to free the road and bill the cost to the defaulter who kept the materials on the public place.

The PWD also informed that it will confiscate the materials. So, the defaulters will not only have to pay the labour and transportation charges but also might lose the materials.

Will this notice remain on paper and publications or will the department act too? Only time will reveal that for now it looks like a bold and brave move from the department to easy public life.
