All you need to know about the Meherpur accident
The accident: On October 30 evening, a speeding truck ran over a procession in Meherpur area. As per information, the truck was heading towards Silchar Medical College and Hospital from town while a procession with the idol of Goddess Kali was moving in the opposite direction. The speeding truck crushed people under its wheel killing two, and injuring many. The agitated public set the truck ablaze and blocked the road.

Casualties: 20-year-old Pompa Dey and 18-year-old Sonali Das were declared brought dead in Silchar Medical College and Hospital. 20-year-old Shova Basfor and 40-year-old Joydeep Dey were in critical condition, while 17 others were admitted in the hospital and out of danger.

Culprits: On Thursday, Cachar Police, on its Facebook page identified the culprits as Raj Kumar Das (Driver) and Prasanna Ramsiyari (Handyman). It also shared that the accused driver “intended to kill” any person who tried to stop the vehicle. Both were arrested and a case has been filed against them.
Political Reactions: Silchar MP Rajdeep Roy met the victims and their families and assured complete aide. He also announced that the traffic policeman, who was on duty in that zone, was suspended. Apart from giving compensation to the dead and injured, the minister announced free healthcare for the ones admitted to the hospital.
Aam janta stoop low: The truck that caused the accident was reportedly carrying illegal posto (poppy seeds). While the road was washed with the blood of the injured, many locals were seen filling sacks with poppy seeds and running away with them. The images of people stealing from the accident site went viral and netizens too were astonished.

Dead body and Cremation controversy: A section of the agitating public wanted to protest with the dead body of the two deceased. As per their alligations, they were denied that right as they believe MLA Sonai and Deputy Speaker Aminul Haque Laskar and MP, Rajdeep Roy rushed the bodies to the crematorium in a hurry. This irked the locals and they started demonstrating. The roads were blocked in Rangirkhari and police had to rush to the spot.
Why section 144 got imposed: Cachar district administration imposed 144 throughout the Silchar town. In an exclusive interaction with Barak Bulletin, deputy commissioner Cachar, Laya Madduri said that the administration has noticed people are damaging properties and creating a ruckus on the streets, and so imposing 144 was important. She also shared that severe action will be taken against anyone who tries to break the law.
DC Laya Madduri expressed her grief and condoled the family of the deceased. She said that the deceased’s family will be compensated with Rs 2 lakh each and the one wounded would be financially supported with Rs 20,000 each.
Latest Update: Nine of the 19 admitted in the hospital has been released while the rest are recovering. MP, Deputy Speaker and Police administration assured that a detailed investigation will be conducted and anyone found guilty won’t be spared.
