The Northeast Frontier Railway is conducting feasibility survey to introduce electric traction in Badarpur subdivision area, a senior railway official said on Saturday.
Survey is underway in Barak Valley and Tripura side for setting up the various requirements for running an electric loco, which includes dedicated electric loco shed, tower wagon shed etc.
Feasibility study will be followed by visit of Railway Electrification team for erecting poles and stringing of electric lines, the official informed.
It can be mentioned here that Indian Railways has set target to achieve 100% railway electrification by next 4-5 years, which will bring down petroleum requirement in railway by 2.83 billion liters per annum. “We are already about 55% run by electric traction. In next 4-5 years, we expect to be a 100% electric driven rail network, the largest network in the world” Railway Minister Piyush Goyal said at the 8th World Energy Policy Summit, some days ago.
Advantages of Electric traction include- reduction in diesel consumption, environment friendly, higher speed of locomotives, better haul of goods train, easy power supply to locos etc.
It is worth mentioning here that electrification project for Badarpur- Silchar section was sanctioned in 2018-19, which also included Arunachal Jiribam & Katakhal- Bharabi section. Badarpur- Karimganj- Agartala- Sabroom section together with Agartala- Akhaura & Karimganj- Mahishasan section was also in the list.
Electrification of railway lines at here, will boost the connectivity to a new level, which was once a day dream for people.
