Meghalaya doctor dies of coronavirus, six family members also test positive

A 69-year-old doctor in Meghalaya lost his life after testing positive for coronavirus. The doctor was the first COVID-19 patient in the state. Apart from him, six family members, who were in contact with him, have also tested positive for the novel virus, and are currently under care.

The doctor who practiced at Shillong’s Bethany Hospital had no travel history. It was reported that he might have got infected by a “silent carrier”. The Meghalaya government has launched a massive search for the spreader and has even announced a two-day curfew in the capital city.

The administration has also identified more than 2,000 people who were in contact with the doctor and asked them to be in quarantine. The government has asked all the people who have visited the hospital on or before March 22 to come forward. To prevent the spread further, it has also asked people to wear masks.

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma also posted about the unfortunate death of the doctor. He wrote, “My heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones. May his soul rest in peace,”

As readers would already know, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has extended the lockdown till May 3. He also said the restrictions could be reviewed for the least affected parts of the country on April 20. As of now, India had 9756 active COVID-19 cases and 377 deaths, according to the latest Health Ministry data.
