“If party wants, I will contest in Silchar,” Tamal Kanti Banik changes stance

Despite all the speculations on news channels and newspapers, the fact is that neither BJP nor Congress has declared the names of their candidates. Speculations continue to rise and there are many twists and turns on the road to General Election to Assam Assembly 2021.

Who will be the Congress candidate from Silchar is a question that is doing rounds in the district as BJP is more likely to stick with the current MLA from the party. According to the reports published in Newspaper, AICC Secretary, Anirudh Singh himself called former SMB chairman Tamal Kanti Banik and asked him to contest from Silchar.

The report added that Banik apparently said no to Singh and opted out from the race to a Congress ticket. However, there seems to be a new twist. While speaking with Barak Bulletin, Tamal Banik, however, took a different stance.

He said, “If the party collectively decides to field me as the contestant from Silchar, as a dedicated party worker, I will contest.”

Earlier, he was quoted by newspapers saying that he will “not contest” this time as he wants to work at the grassroots level.

According to sources present in the meeting, the party is yet to finalise on the candidate who will contest from Silchar. “The candidate will be decided on the basis of the survey,” said a highly placed source in Congress.
